Kansas does not have a separate extension request form. If you are entitled to a refund, an extension is not required. To pay the tax balance due for an extension, use the Kansas Payment Voucher (K-40V) and mark the box indicating an extension payment. If you do not pay the tax due (may be estimated) by the original due date, you will owe interest and penalty on any balance due.

  • Electronic Filing:
Kansas accepts Resident, Nonresident, and Part-year returns electronically. They can be transmitted with the Federal return or transmitted as a State only return. To participate in the fed/state efile program for Kansas, the IRS must first accept you into the federal electronic filing program. You DO NOT need to register with the State of Kansas. When the IRS approves you for electronic filing of tax returns, Kansas automatically accepts you.
