Indiana State Mandate Tax preparers who have been approved by the IRS are automatically approved to submit Indiana returns electronically. There is no separate approval process for Indiana. New Indiana law went into effect January 1, 2008, that requires most tax preparers to file Indiana individual income tax returns electronically. Tax preparers who file 100 or more Indiana tax returns annually are obligated to follow this new law.

    Please allow 3 weeks before calling for an electronically filed return or 12 weeks for a return filed on paper. Check the Status of Your Current Year's Refund Online. Call the automated refund line (317) 233-4018 and follow the instructions. You'll need to know your Social Security Number and the exact amount of your refund before calling.

    You should file for an extension of time to file. You will need to submit an Automatic Extension of Time to File (IT-9). Indiana also recognizes valid federal extension dates plus 30 days. If you have a federal extension, attach a copy of Form 4868 to your Indiana return when filing. Make sure you file no later than Nov. 15, 2008. Note: Remember, 90 percent of the tax due to Indiana must still be paid by April 15, 2008, in order to escape a penalty charge. Interest will be due on any tax that remains unpaid during the extension period.
